Covers? Why not. Let's start with one of my favourites....

Ben L'Oncle Soul ~ Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes get a MAJOR injection of soul.

The Bird and The Bee ~ I Can't Go For That - An AMAZING cover of a classic Hall & Oates tune.

Laura Marling ~ The Needle and The Damage Done - She does Neil Young proud.

Bruno Mars ~ Valerie - An awesome tribute to Amy Winehouse

Birdy ~ Skinny Love - Just when you thought this song wasn't depressing enough.... (Bon Iver). This little one is just 16 years old, comes from the UK and plays the piano like a pro.

...to check out the iTunes free single of the week.

It's the amazingly talented Rebecca Ferguson. This awesome little Brit was a runner up on the show The X Factor. If you're a fan of Joss Stone or Amy Winehouse, you'll love this gal.

Here's the free tune they're serving up on iTunes.

Weird Music News

by Carmen Cruz

Some of it is weird, some of it is gross, and some of it is just sad. Either way, inquiring minds wanna know, right?

 Weird/Gross/Disturbing
Some time tonight in, a painting by rocker Pete 'messed-up' Doherty and the late Amy Winehouse, is to go on sale at auction.  The painting is titled “Ladylike,” and is supposed to be an artistic depiction of Doherty’s one-time band The Libertines, alongside a small self-portrait of Amy Winehouse painted with her own blood (ew).
Wanna see?

Let's take a closer look, shall we? Here's Amy's bloody self portrait.

The auction starts tonight at London’s Cob Gallery, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The painting is expected to fetch around $129,000 smackers.

Sad/Weird

Hey! Remember that band called Limp Bizkit?!?!?! Yeah, most people just wanna forget about them, but uh-uh, Fred Durst will not have that. He will not have that at all.
The band has just revealed the name of their NEW album (can you believe it?!?!). It's gonna be called... wait for it..... wait for it.....
'Stampede Of The Disco Elephants'. I know you're sitting on the edge of your seat right now, and I don't blame you. Ok, ok, sarcasm aside, Fred is pretty pumped about the album and says that you can expect some 'some crazy Limp Bizkit shit' (I believe the shit part)... I keed, I keed. Oh! And just a heads up, rumour has it that good ol' Fred has given drummer John Otto and DJ Lethal the kick to the curb.

Just Plain Weird
Tom 'Couch-Hopping' Cruise has a brand new moving coming out called 'Rock Of Ages'. It's based on the broadway musical (wait a minute. Does this mean there's singing throughout most of the movie? Ugh..) with Tom playing 80's rocker Stacee Jaxx. The movie also stars Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin.
It's trailer time.

Recently, music producer Adam Anders has been going on and on about how "amazing" and "powerful" Tom's voice is. Is it possible the Tom Cruise is a triple threat? An actor, a singer AND a Scientologist? I don't believe it!
Don't ask me how, but I managed to track down a small sample of Tom Cruise actually doing some of his vocal exercises. Are you ready for this???
Rock of Ages hits theaters on June 1st.

Enjoy!!!

Songs of The Week!!!

by Carmen Cruz

Here's a few songs I have on repeat right now.

Queens Of The Stone Age ~ Go With The Flow - Oh how this song reminds me of the game 'Rock Band'!!!!

A former colleague in Calgary was telling me how a friend of hers had boinked Josh Homme when he came through Cow Town a couple of months ago. The dude is married and has a couple of kids. Douche!!! My crush on the 'Ginger Elvis' has died. Last I heard, he was still texting the hussy on a regular basis. SOOOO LAME!

Jaydiohead ~ A cool mix of Jay-Z and Radiohead. Believe it.

And speaking of Jay-Z...

Kayne West & Jay-z ft. Frank Ocean ~ No Church In The Wild - This song has such a wicked beat.

Mark Ronson ~ Amy - Mark Ronson is the bees knees. He worked with Amy Winehouse on her music and they became super close friends. Is this a song for her??? No idea. Wicked tune though.

Fiona Apple ~ Paper Bag - Whatever happened to Fiona Apple? Seriously??? Well she's released a few albums since her glory days in the late 90's and rumour had it that she was supposed to release a new album she worked on with Michelle Branch this past spring Still... Nada. What gives?

Lil Wayne ~ How To Love - Soooooo gooOOOooood!

Erykah Badu ~ Bag Lady - A song about ladies carrying around all that useless emotional baggage.
Pack light.

My sister is a photographer (here's her site, if you're interested!) and this song inspired this pic for one of her projects.  Thank GAD for photoshop!

Enjoy!

Songs Of The Week!

by Carmen Cruz

I'm gonna make it short and sweet. Here's what I'm really into...

Gorillaz ~ On Melancholy Hill. The video totally doesn't suit the song. I almost recommend listening to the tune first and watch it with the video after. It's very weird, but a wicked song.

Robyn ~ Cobra Style. A wicked take on a tune by the Teddybears.

I love Robyn's tunes. I have to admit that she's got something so strange about her. You wanna say that she's attractive, but for some reason, you just can't go there... ya know what I mean? Or maybe it's just me...

Hugo ~ 99 Problems. OH MY GAD I LOVE THIS TUNE!!!! This guy does an AWESOME cover of Jay-Z's song. A job well done!

Rufus Wainwright ~ April Fools. I adore Rufus. I do. Check out the video. It's a bit older and features cameos by a young Melissa Auf Der Maur and Gwen Stefani. I'm also partial to this song... you know... being an April baby (fool) and all ;D

*Side note: I had a chance to interview Rufus a few years ago. He was catty but cool and we immediately hit it off. I remember him complaining about a diet he was on. It was called 'not eating'. Fail.

Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse ~ Valerie.  Why? Because it's awesome. That is all.

Enjoy!

Bye Amy...

by Carmen Cruz

We can't say that we didn't see this coming, it was just a matter of when. Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home Saturday morning. So sad to see such an amazing talent go to waste.

Now, prepare for the bombarding of 'tribute songs' from half ass friends or aquaintances, looking to make a few bucks off someones death. Pretty pathetic huh?

In the midst of all the ingenuine people, looking to gain extra attention or profit from this loss, you will actually find some true, real and honest pain and sadness. Some of these might actually be unexpected. Take this entry from Russell Brand, posted on his website, for example. I appreciate Russell taking the time to jot this down. Rather than profiting from a persons death, how about raising awareness for what killed  him/her? What a concept! Perhaps, it'll catch on one day.
