TED Vancouver Sculpture Set Up Over Downtown

by Carmen Cruz

Artist Janet Echelman’s 745-foot wide installation — made of soft netting — will be suspended between the roof of the 24-storey Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and the Vancouver Convention Centre where TED2014 is being held.
What makes this EXTRA cool is the fact that people will be able to choreograph the lighting of the giant sculpture by waving their cell phones. CooooOOOOooool!!!

Snagged this pic from my amigo Chris S. Gracias!!!!!

The TED conference will be in Vancouver for the very first time from March 17th - 21st.

Enjoy.

Dumb & Dumber To: Win A Walk-On Role!

by Carmen Cruz

There's no question about it, Dumb & Dumber is one of the funniest and most quotable movies
ever made.
And now (JOY!) it's official: Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey have signed on to be a part of the sequel (Dumb & Dumber To) which begins filming next month (September = YAY!). The film is scheduled to be released some time in 2014.
Can you imagine being a part of this epic sequel?!?! Guess what... You CAN! The Farrelly brothers (the writer/director team of both the original and the latest installment) have issued a contest for a walk on-role on the upcoming film. Here are all the details (as posted on their facebook page):

"Alright, here are the contest rules for Winning A Walk-On On Dumb & Dumber To!

First, make a Vine re-creating a scene from the original Dumb & Dumber, but put your own spin on it.

Use the hashtag #DumbTo so we can see them all. (Yeah yeah, I know what a "hashtag" is...now)

You have until September 15, 2013 to post.

After September 15, Bobby and I will pick the winner. The winner and a friend gets to be a walk-on on the film.

Good luck!"

Aaaaaand here are a couple examples of what they're looking for....

Got it?
Good.

Good luck!

Enjoy.

Obligatory quote:
Lloyd: The first time I set eyes on Mary Swanson, I just got that old fashioned romantic feeling where I'd do anything to bone her.
Harry: That's a special feeling, Lloyd.

Songs Of The Week: Serena Ryder, AlunaGeorge, The Roots, Empire Of The Sun, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

by Carmen Cruz

Musical Goodness.

Serena Ryder ~ What I Wouldn't Do - This woman is on a roll this year, and finally getting the credit and attention she deserves. Awesome.

AlunaGeorge ~ A fantastic duo from the UK. They've just released a new album called Body Music. Do yourself a huge favour and go get it. Top notch.

.... and lookey here! You can now stream the entire album. They also do this weirdly cool cover of Montell Jordan's 'This Is How We Do It'.

The Roots ~ The Seed - An oldie, but a goodie.

Empire Of The Sun - Alive

Yeah Yeah Yeahs ~ Despair - This song is constantly on repeat. Just a heads up, the talented Karen O sings the song a cappella for the first 1:45 of the video. After that, the album version of the song starts. It's impossible to watch this video and not feel great. Such a wicked tune.

Enjoy.

by Carmen Cruz

Musical Awesomeness.

Saul Williams ~ List Make Of Demands - If this tune comes on while you're running/working out, you're probably gonna pull something...

Kings Of Leon ~ Supersoaker - A fun and upbeat song from King Of Leon's new upcoming album called 'Mechanical Bull' (out September 24rth). Sounds awesome!

Amy Winehouse ~ You Know I'm No Good

Washed Out ~ Don't Give Up - Looking for the perfect soundtrack to play while lounging at the beach? Washed Out is whatcha wanna listen to. This song is off their new album called 'Paracosm' (out August 13th). So GooooooOOOOooooood.

Depeche Mode ~ Enjoy The Silence - This song always reminds me of driving around the River Valley in Edmonton in the summertime. Yes, we have summer in Edmonton. You know that elusive list of your top 25 songs of all time? This one is on that list for me.
When oh when will these boys make their way to Vancouver?!?!?!

Photo Diary: The Vancouver Special

by Carmen Cruz

Favourite Photos This Week.

On Broadway near Arbutus
On Broadway near Oak Street

Whoever takes the time to leave these notes around the Kitsilano / False Creek area is every shade of awesome.
As you're leaving Wreck Beach, you'll see this. I'm not sure why, but I found it hilarious that some people need to be reminded.

Speaking of beaches, this is what sunset at Kits dog beach looks like. The dogs here really have it good, don't they?
Every once in a while, there's a guy who likes to set up his telescope close to Kits beach. He points it towards the moon, and puts up a sign encouraging people to check out. The view is absolutely spectacular. This is kinda what you'll see...
The moon hit's your eye like a... oh forget it.

Only in Vancouver.

I Love...

by Carmen Cruz

The new Apple earpods.

The sound quality is so much better than the regular earbuds and they actually sit nicely in your ear without falling out, or making your ear hurt after having them in for longer periods of time.
The microphone/volume button is also much easier to use. A serious improvement for Apple.
If you don't have a pair yet, invest. They're well worth the $35.

When I think of Christmas, I think of Slayer. Don't You?

by Carmen Cruz

I laughed when I saw this, and yet, I kinda wanted one.

Right now, the thrash metal band Slayer is selling a... get this... Christmas sweater.

The jumpers go for $79.99 (yikes!) and only available in a men's medium, large and extra large (nothing for the ladies? Boo-urns. I guess it's nothing a good hot wash and trip to the dryer can't fix, right?).

For more info on this kick ass sweater, click here.

by Carmen Cruz

It's happening tonight, around 9-ish in Stanley Park.
Tonight's feature movie? Spaceballs!!!

(**Confession Time: We're all guilty of this - never having seen a super popular and classic flick that everyone else has seen. For me, I've only ever seen the first 10 minutes of Spaceballs. That's it. I've also never seen the movie Top Gun. Let the judgement begin....**)

Need more info on tonight's movie? Go here.

To the gang at Fresh Air Cinema - you're the bees knees.

See you there!

Vancouver International Jazz Festival

by Carmen Cruz

If you haven't had a chance to check out this years Vancouver Jazz Fest, you still have a few days left! There are quite a few different venues scattered around Vancouver where you can check out some amazing (and free!) live jazz. If you're willing to part with a few bucks, here are some acts you should definitely check out:

Get The Blessing ~ A Jazz/Rock band from England. Honestly? They're a truly BRILLIANT band! They're playing The Venue tonight. Tickets are $20+sc (and worth every penny). They hit the stage at 9pm.

Janelle Monaé ~ I consider her a female version of Outkast. She's AMAZING!!! She's playing THIS Friday at the Centre for Performing Arts. Tickets are about $47+sc and last time I checked, there were still a few left.

Jill Barber ~ She'll be putting on 2 shows at Granville Island - Performance Works. The earlier show is sold out, but you can still get tickets for the 10PM show. They'll set you back about $27.50 plus service charge.

Sunday is the last day for this years Jazzfest, but it's also Canada day soooo.... go nuts!

On a side note, one of my favourite people in the world took me to check out a band I'd never heard of, and promised me that  I'd love it and 'go nuts'. Turns out these guys were one of the headliners of this years Jazzfest. They're a group called the Balkan Beat Box and they're a fusion of Arabic, Mediterranean, Balkan, reggae and dance music. I don't think I've ever danced so much (at a show) in a loooong time. I think everyone in the Vogue theater left happy, covered in sweat and a few pounds lighter.
Wait a minute.... ;D
So I thought I'd share.

**Side note: To the bald guy dancing in front of the stage, you made my night. You were AWESOME!!!**

Enjoy!
